cuts import tariff on textiles, garments
|
|
Vietnam has slashed its tariff on textiles and garments
imported from the European Union (EU) and the United States to
five percent from seven percent, following a Vietnam-EU
agreement on market access and the Vietnam-US trade agreement
on textiles and garments.
Under a decision signed by the Vietnamese Ministry of
Finance on Wednesday, the new rate is applicable to garments
and textiles imported from the EU and the United States since
Jan. 1, 2005, local newspaper Vietnam Economic Times reported
on Thursday.
Vietnam imports a small volume of garments and textiles
from the EU and the United States, most of which are brands
favored by local high-income earners.
The EU and the United States are two biggest importers of
Vietnamese textiles and garments. Vietnam's textile and
garment export revenues to the EU and the United States are
expected to rise to 1.5 billion US dollars, and 2.7 billion
dollars in 2005 from 700 million dollars and 2.5 billion
dollars in 2004, respectively.
Vietnam has shipped abroad textile and garment products
worth of 566 million dollars in the first two months of this
year, up 1. 4 percent from the same period last year,
according to the country 's General Statistics Office.

| USA:
Textile Import Growth Adds To Trade Deficit |
A surge in textile imports contributed to a widened US trade deficit in January, according to a report by the government’s Commerce Department.
The report shows the US trade gap as broadening to an almost record $58.3 billion in January, as ever-increasing consumer demand sent imports rocketing.
The textiles category saw one of the most notable growths in imports, the report said.
During January, the total number of US imports leapt 1.9 per cent to a record $159.1 billion, with a 0.4 per cent exports increase to a record $100.8bn.
US textile groups have warned that imports from China will grow rapidly now that World Trade Organisation Quotas - which governed the amount of textiles trade between WTO countries - have expired.
January’s deficit came as a shock to economists, who had forecast that the gap would widen only marginally to $56.5bn.
