| French textile industry condemns Tsunami aid for Asian rivals
|
Claude Tetard, chairman of the French union of clothing textile producers, UFIH, has described plans by the European Union to cut the duty on textile imports from countries affected by the Tsunami as a stab in the back for French jobs. The import tariff reduction, which comes into effect on April 1, has also led to a letter of protest from the French foreign trade minister, Francois Loos, to the European Trade Commissioner, Peter Mandelson. In his letter, dated February 16, Mr Loos says that the European Commission has a duty to ensure that the clothing and textile industries in the Pan-European Mediterranean Area have a future. The Tsunami aid project, he says, would destabilise those industries.
The Commission is planning to reduce duty on imports of textiles from India from 12 to 9.5 per cent and that imposed on footwear from India and Thailand from 17 to 13.5 per cent.

COTTON FIBER PRODUCTION UP 3% IN 2004

Uzbekistan increased cotton fiber production 3% in 2004 to
976,656 tonnes, a source in the State Statistics Department
told Interfax. Uzbekistan planted 1.418 million hectares of
cotton in 2004, up from 1.392 million hectares in 2003. But
cotton was actually harvested from only 1.362 million hectares
as part of the crop perished due to heavy rains. Uzbekistan
harvested 3.534 million tonnes of raw cotton in 2004, up 23.7%
from the previous year. The country harvested 2.856 million
tonnes of raw cotton in 2003, the lowest figure in ten years.
Uzbekistan is the world's fifth largest producer of cotton.
The country produces about 3.5 million tonnes of raw cotton
and 1 million to 1.2 million tonnes of cotton fiber annually.
It exports 75% of its cotton fiber.
