| Pak, India textile industrialists to urge
govts. to boost bilateral trade |
Indian and Pakistan textile industrialists have agreed to ask their respective governments to take steps to boost bilateral textile trade.
The agreement was arrived at during a meeting between the representatives of Northern India Textile Mills Association and All Pakistan Textile Mills Association in Karachi.
According to the Online News both the sides agreed to contact each other after every three months to review their overall activities.
The visiting Indian textile delegation said that New Delhi had presented a proposal that both countries' textile manufactures should explore ways and means to evolve collective prices system and both countries should adopt Indian arbitration system instead to resort to Liver Pool Cotton for arbitration.
The Indians were of the view that the boost in bilateral textile trade would promote the socio-economic standard of life of the people on both the sides of the border. |
| VIETNAM: Garment industry invests heavily to grab global market |
With the lifting of textile and garment export quotas for WTO members in 2005, Vietnam's industry is pulling out all the stops to win contracts on the world market.
To increase their competitive edge, Vietnamese garment enterprises continue to improve productivity and product quality by making new technological investments.
HCM City-based Nha Be garment company has decided to invest an additional VND50bil (US$3.18mil) to install a modern production line.
The new line will produce high quality suits for export to demanding markets in the US and the EU.
In a similar effort, Duc Giang Tailoring Company in northern Vietnam has invested in modern machines for its six garment and embroidery workshops.
Tran Xuan Can, Duc Giang Tailoring Company director, said his company is ready to enter into domestic or foreign joint ventures to expand production.
Pham Tat Thang, Director of the Trade Ministry's Trade Information Centre, said despite stiff global competition, trade liberalisation could be beneficial to some degree by forcing local producers to improve their operations.
Vietnam will also be able to freely export garments to the EU and Canada, following their decision in last December to lift garment quotas for Vietnam in 2005, he said.
However, Mr Thang said, the biggest challenge facing the country and other smaller producers like Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is the fierce competition from China and India, the world's two biggest garment producers.
Trade officials are encouraging textile and garment companies not to ignore small orders, which are more suited to local small- and medium-sized enterprises. |
| EGYPT: Trade minister pushes for quality control |
| Egyptian Industry and Trade Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid encouraged the local textile industry to improve product quality and competitiveness while touring the Qalyubiyya Governorate, one of Egypt most important industrial areas. Rashid move was prompted by the signing of the Qualified Industry Zones (QIZ) Agreement with the US and Israel. The textile industry is considered a stronghold in the Egyptian economy in terms of employment, investment, credit and export earnings. QIZ is meant to enable certain local goods with some Israeli input to be exported to the US without paying any customs duties. |
