| HONG KONG: Victory City plans expansion, eyes garment biz |
Victory Holdings International Holdings plans to invest $1.75 billion over the next five years as a part of its expansion into garment manufacturing business, according to executive director Samuel Choi Lin-hung.
According to him, the capital expenditure was necessary to fulfil the company's ambitious goal of increasing turnover from $3.7 billion this year to $10.1 billion in 2010.
During the first six months till September, the company抯 turnover rose 60 per cent to $1.28 billion, due mainly to the contribution of a new yarn-dyeing facility that began operation in August last year. Net profit rose 40 per cent to $102.96 million.Thomas Lee Chung-shing, the company's financial controller, said the capital expenditure would be financed by profits and a 41/2-year syndicated loan of $688 million secured from 27 banks. After refinancing $288 million of existing debt, the rest of the loan would be used to build factories.
"Our vision is to be a supplier of both textiles and garments," Mr Lee said.
Currently, the company has no garment business. Textiles, namely knit fabric and dyed yarn, account for 71 per cent of its turnover, with the rest coming from textile trading.
Victory City's first garment factory would be completed in the first half of next year on the mainland, Mr Lee said.
Mr Choi said the company was also looking at setting up factories in other countries, possibly Cambodia, Vietnam, Kenya or Jordan.
The company targets $430 million in turnover from garment manufacturing in its next fiscal year, and that this will rise to $2.2 billion in fiscal 2010.
Lee said, By being a garment producer, we can approach them directly to bring business for our fabrics.
Mr Choi said Victory City would complete a new yarn-spinning facility in northern China in 2007. Currently, all the company's yarn and fabric processing is done in Xinhui, Guangdong province.
By fiscal 2010, Victory City plans to more than double its dyed-yarn output, to 5.08 million kilograms, and almost triple its dyed-fabric output, to 10.88 million kg. |
| Indian group buys world’s finest wool bale |
The world's joint finest bale of Merino wool was sold in Melbourne yesterday (December 8) for a seasonal record price of 300,000 Australian cents per kg. greasy.
The bale, grown in a controlled environment by The Wool Factory, of Horsham, Victoria, tested at 11.8 microns, beating the previous record bale by 0.1 microns.
After strong bidding by buyers from Asia and Europe at the Landmark Jackson of Geelong auction, the bale was sold to Indian textile group Raymond, of Mumbai, one of the world's largest vertical operations, for A$279,000.
The bale weighed 93 kg. and measured 68 mm. in length, with a staple strength of 40 Newtons per kilotex and a top yield of 74.5%.
Wednesday's auction followed the private sale, reported by Reuters news agency, of another 11.8-micron bale, produced by the Highlander Partnership, of Southern New South Wales. Weighing 91 kg., the bale was purchased by Italian manufacturer Loro Piana for A$227,500 (250,000 Australian cents per kg. greasy). |
