| Prices of polyester raw materials are in free fall |
Prices of polyester fibers are expected further falling in the short term after oil prices and raw material costs sharply declined in the past seven days. China's polyester makers were forced suspending production in a large number of plants in order to limit the current decrease in polyester prices. The downward trend in cotton prices is adding more pressure at the same time.
Crude oil prices dramatically decreased in the past seven days, leading to lower costs and prices in the polyester pipeline.
In New York, crude oil for January fell to a three-month low on Tuesday at US$41.46 per barrel, down 26% from the record level of US$55.67 reached on 25 October.
Oil prices are now back to the levels of July-August, leaving room for sharp price decreases in the petrochemical industry.
Fall in MEG prices
Not surprisingly, prices of paraxylene and ethylene were in free fall on Asian markets in the past days.
Paraxylene is widely used for making Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), a main component in polyester production.
Ethylene is a primary feedstock of Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG), the other material used for producing polyester.
MEG prices dramatically fell in the past seven days, rapidly reacting to crude oil's decline.
Average price of imported MEG decreased to US$1,020-US$1,030 in China, down 6.30% from last Wednesday.
Locally-produced MEG even fell 900 yuan per ton or 8.18% at 10,100 yuan per ton.
PTA prices also declined in the same period, although less dramatically.
In addition to the fall in oil prices, MEG and PTA producers are confronted with a sharp decrease in demand from China's polyester groups.
Stopping 30% of total capacities
In order to limit the current decline in polyester prices in the PRC, a large number of plants suspended production in the past weeks.
About 30% of capacities would be currently stopped, a very high level only a few days before the elimination of textile quotas and an expected surge in world demand for China's apparel.
Far from booming, China's clothing industry is apparently trapped with huge stocks. Demand for filament fabrics plummeted as a result, leaving weavers in Zhejiang and Jiangsu with very high quantities of unsold fabrics.
Stocks would have reached between two and three months.
Although production was sharply reduced, prices of filament yarns continued decreasing in the past seven days.
Prices of polyester staple fibers were also down, further depressed by a new decline in cotton prices.
The polyester pipeline is actually anticipating lower prices ahead, therefore reducing its demand whatever the product, from naphtha to garments.
There is no clear sign that prices could rebound in the short term, as a consequence. |
| EU urges China to moderate textile exports after quotas end |
The European Union called on China at a summit here to rein in its textile exports after international quotas are scrapped next year.
A spokeswoman for European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso said the EU has urged Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao to exercise 'moderation' once the import quota system is lifted on Jan 1.
'We appeal to China... to understand that as a global player they have to exert moderation,' she said, adding: 'The question is not (import) restrictions, the question is moderation.'
Some estimates predict that China's world market share of textiles and clothes will rise from 17 pct in 2003 to up to 50 pct when the import quota system is dismantled.
Analysts say a spike in cheap Chinese textile exports could bring disaster to textile industries in developing countries and cause job losses in European countries that find it difficult to compete with China. |
