| Free Quota Agreement for Vietnamese Garments Signed |
An agreement to eliminate quotas on textile and garments exported from Vietnam to the European Union was signed Dec. 2 in Hanoi.
Under the agreement, beginning Jan. 1, 2005, Vietnam will be permitted to freely export textiles and clothing to the world's largest garment market.
The EU consumes US$70 billion worth of textiles annually.
Signatories to the agreement were Vice Trade Minister Luong Van Tu and Head of the European Commission Delegation to Vietnam Ambassador Markus Cornaro.
The agreement is the second most important bilateral trade deal between Vietnam and Europe since the bloc agreed to Vietnam's WTO accession in Hanoi on October 9.
This agreement is tipped to create a breakthrough, improving the already sound trade relationship between Vietnam and the EU, said Vice Trade Minister Tu, adding that two-way trade will enjoy favourable conditions for further development.
Minister Tuyen said the agreement was the result of very long negotiations between the two sides.
The agreement will create favourable conditions for our garment enterprises to develop on their own accord and actively enter the EU market," Tuyen said.
The minister said he will work with domestic garment enterprises and the Ministry of Industry this week to discuss ways to improve the quality and competitiveness of Vietnamese products sold in the EU. |
