| Change Needed For Survival Of Taiwan's Textile Industry: Expert |
In the face of an abolition of the quota system due next year in the global textile market, Taiwan's textile industry must seek to diversify and push for transformation if it wants to enjoy continued growth, domestic experts said Thursday.
Huang Yao-tang, chairman of the Taiwan Textile Research Institute, said that the domestic industry should shift its focus to industrial applications for sustainable development in view of fiercer challenges from structural changes in the international market.
Once the quota system has been lifted, Taiwan's garment makers -- currently the mainstay of the industry, accounting for 80 per cent of the domestic industry -- will not be able to compete against rivals in mainland China due to their cheaper production costs, Huang said.
In an effort to break this bottleneck, Taiwan textile companies should devote their resources to creative applications for diversified uses.
Compared to a share of 30 per cent or the even higher 50 percent production application rate enjoyed by European and U.S. textile makers in other industries, such as the biotech and the architecture arenas, Taiwan manufacturers should bravely embrace the arrival of an "intelligence era" with sharpened competitiveness, he argued.
The major obstacle facing the domestic industry today, he pointed out, is that research and markets are not pegged to each other. Taiwan companies do not have the know-how to turn research achievements into innovative products in the market and to promote them in other countries, he said.
To serve that end, the Taiwan Textile Research Institute provides domestic companies with total solution packages, with finance and subsidies from the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), he said.
The institute will hold a series of seminars and exhibitions to display their advanced research results and new products particularly and solely for industry insiders, starting from next Monday.
In terms of application fields, the pavilions will focus on themes surrounding health care, security monitoring, medical treatment and digital imprinting and testing.
Taiwan's textile industry and related businesses yield about NT$60 billion (US$1.88 billion) in output value per year at present, and an MOEA upgrading program seeks to double the level to NT$120 billion by 2008. The domestic industry was once the country's No. 1 earner of foreign exchange reserves.
