| Opposition endorses textile tariff reduction legislation |
The Federal Opposition has agreed to support Government legislation to reduce tariffs in the textile, clothing and footwear industries.
The legislation would see a further 5 per cent reduction in tariffs from 2010.
It would also provide a $740 million assistance program to help prepare the sectors for a reduction in protection.
Labor's industry spokesman Stephen Smith concedes unions would prefer tariffs not be further reduced, but he says Labor has secured an agreement from the Government for a review of the sector in 2008.
"This will ensure that the strategic investment program which effectively takes effect from the first of January next year will be in place and give certainty to the industry," he said.
"The legislative package also includes legislation for further tariff reductions in 2010 and 2015 in this area."

| Board of Textile City holds meeting, reviews progress |
The 11-member board of directors of the proposed Textile City on Monday elected Dewan Yousuf Farooqui as a chairman of the board and decided to meet every month to review progress of the project.
In a second meeting of the board members, it was decided to appoint a chief executive later after receiving interest of investment from firms of different countries including China, Singapore and Hong Kong.
“When the procedure is completed, the board would go for CEO appointment,” said a senior board member. “The meeting however had a lengthy discussion to resolve the issue of land purchase and possession.”
He said Tehsin Khan Iqbal, secretary of the textile ministry, chaired the meeting while it was attended by all 10 members of the board.
The participants included Dr Mutwakkil Kazi, secretary industries, Dewan Yousuf Farooqui, chief executive officer Dewan Mushtaq Motors, Ali Raza, president National Bank of Pakistan, Zafar Iqbal, managing director Pak Oman Investment Company, Zaigham A Rizvi, managing director Pak Kuwait Investment Company, Nasar Hayat, secretary industries Sindh, Abdul Razak Teli, managing director Naqshbandi Industries, S M Muneer, chairman Din Leather, Sheikh Omar Afzal-ul-Jameel, director Port Qasim, and S Akbar Hussain, chairman Export Processing Zone Authority.
Located in the outskirt of metropolis, the 1,250-acre Textile City project near Port Qasim was envisaged last year with a 23-kilometre dedicated water pipeline, 24-hour supply of gas, water and electricity and a proper system of sewerage.
The project is aimed to house over 50 textile units, with working conditions conducive to creativity, infrastructure and power supply, minimum regulatory overheads, maximum flexibility in the choice and use of space and minimal costs.
“The meeting also decided to acquire land at Rs 1 million per acre,” said a board member. “It was decided not to follow the traditional way of awarding possession in the existing industrial areas and completing all the procedural and regulatory issues before awarding the possession.”
He said the meeting decided to pursue agencies concerned for infrastructure development to speed up activity.
A public-private joint stock company has already been set up with an initial capital of Rs 1.10 billion. The federal government is sharing Rs 500 million in the company while contribution of Rs 600 million has been for the consortium of National Bank of Pakistan, PICIC, Saudi Pak, Pak Kuwait, Pak Oman, Pak-Libya, PIDC, Port Qasim and the Sindh government.
