| India:
Textile industry set to hike capital expenditure |
With Government taking care of anamolies on the taxation structure and
quotas in the world textile trade being phased out, the Indian textile
industry finds itself staring at a huge opportunity and is planning huge
investments in the coming months.
While many companies have suddenly become agressive, disbursements from
Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme have also seen a massive growth.
The interest in the scheme, which was announced in 1999 and provided five
per cent interest subsidy to the units willing to upgrade technology, has
suddenly gone up as companies are no longer handicapped by fiscal
structure and want to take advantage of phasing out of quotas.
The number of applications received for assistance under the scheme in
this fiscal till September has gone up to 542 as against 867 in the whole
of 2003-04. The proposals that have been cleared in the first six months
of this fiscal comes to 557 as against 884 in 2003-04 while disbursals
have been on 457 applications in 2004-05 as against 814 last year.
The cost of the projects that have applied for assistance in first two
quarters of this fiscal comes to Rs 4669.77 crore as against Rs 3355.73
crore in the whole of last fiscal.
The total amount sanctioned comes to Rs 1731.15 crore till September this
year as against Rs 1340.65 crore last year. Disbursals have also gone up
to Rs 957.1 crore as compared to Rs 855.54 crore in 2003-04.

KONG: Everlast Extends Licensee Contracts |
Apparel company Everlast Worldwide Inc has expanded its relationships with
two of its licensees.
Hong Kong-based Muse Marketing Limited will introduce Everlast apparel in
Hong Kong, which will ship in autumn 2005. Muse originally signed with
Everlast in October 2001, and has seen considerable success with its line
of Everlast bags and footwear.
Hong Kong-based Stelux Watch Ltd, which is launching Everlast-branded
watches in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and
Japan, is also to expand its territory to include Europe. Its line of
Everlast watches will begin shipping in Europe by mid-2005.
George Horowitz, chairman and chief executive of Everlast Worldwide Inc
said: "These expanded relationships with existing licensees provide
ample testimony to the strength and universal appeal of the Everlast
brand.
"Both of these companies are excited about the potential for their
initial Everlast products and approached us about new opportunities. In
addition, both Muse and Stelux are top flight designers and marketers and
will enhance the worldwide stature of the Everlast brand."
Everlast Worldwide Inc manufactures, markets and licenses sporting goods
and apparel products under the Everlast brand name.
