| USA: Coalition wants restrictions on artificial fabric imports |
A coalition of textile groups has urged the U.S. government for restricting Chinese imports of "other synthetic filament fabric," a category of goods that includes high-performance artificial fibers used for industrial fabrics and specialty apparel and nonapparel products.The American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition, National Council of Textile Organizations, National Textile Association and the labor group UNITEHERE filed the petition.
The United States imported $239.8 million in synthetic filament fiber in 2003, of which $6.6 million came from China.
The Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements, a U.S. government agency, has 15 days to decide whether to accept the petition and then up to 90 days to decide whether to impose China safeguard quotas.
The quotas restrict how fast imports of Chinese goods in affected categories can grow once the old quota system disappears Jan. 1.
