| China
strongly opposes US imports limits on Chinese chemical fiber, cotton
items, says official |
The Chinese government on Thursday expressed firm opposition to the US
government's acceptance of an application to limit imports of Chinese
chemical fiber and cotton items, said a spokesman with the Ministry of
Commerce.
The US textile industry submitted the application Wednesday, accusing
Chinese textile goods of posing a threat to US market order.
"The Chinese government strongly opposes the US government's decision
and reserves the right to take further actions under the framework of the
World Trade Organization (WTO)," Spokesman Chong Quan said in a
statement.
The decision violates conditions delineated in legal documents for China's
WTO admission and US domestic rules on the procedure, Chong said, noting
that it also runs against to the WTO's principles of liberalization of
free trade and free textile trade.
"This will severely frustrate the Chinese confidence in the
international trade environment after its WTO accession, and also harm the
interests of US cotton growers, textile consumers, importers, fabric
machinery makers and US investors in China," Chong warned.

| South
Africa: Protest for Support of Textile Industry |
Thousands of jobs are lost every year in the country's textile industry
because of clothing retailers that do not support the local industry but
import from overseas sweat shops, according to unionists.
South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union shop stewards staged a
protest in front of Truworths head office yesterday, demanding the
clothing retailer support the local textile industry.
About 100 protesters waved placards with slogans such as "Truworths
you are too negative", "Don't invest in unpatriotic
retailers", and demanded that Truworths sign last year's Nedlac
agreement, which committed local clothing retailers to sourcing their
goods locally and from companies with fair labour practices.
But Truworths spokesman Tony Tailor affirmed her company's full commitment
to the local manufacturing industry, which was more flexible and offered
shorter runs than imports.
Etienne Vlok, Sactwu's trade union researcher, said the protest was to
create awareness among Truworths shareholders, who were attending an
annual general meeting. He accused Truworths and other companies,
including Foschini, Woolworths and Edcon (Edgars, Jet and Sales House) of
not being committed to supporting the local textiles industry, and
contributing to the high unemployment rate.
Vlok said: "Truworths imports most of its stuff and is making huge
profits without supporting the local industry. They claim that a
substantial amount of goods are local, but that's not enough.
"Over the past three years Truworths had made R1.2 billion in profit.
During the same period the textiles industry had about 50 000 job losses.
They still want to increase their imports and decrease their local
sourcing. Between 2002-2003 they increased Chinese clothing imports by
110%. This has more than doubled."
But Tailor said Truworths only imported 25% of its needs and the other 75%
were local goods.
In "some cases" clothing had to be imported "as it could
not be produced in South Africa, or was just too expensive to manufacture
locally", Tailor said.
